Survey: SA economy absorbed extra 240 000 jobs

The third Quarterly Labour Force Survey reveals that SA’s economy absorbed an additional 240 000 jobs between 1 July and 30 September 2022. This bolstered employment by 1.3%, which equates to a total of 15.8 million jobs. This effectively lifts the nation from the world’s worst episode of joblessness, leaving that unenviable position to Namibia and Nigeria. But SA has endured two decades of high unemployment, respectively. Social Policy Initiative’s Isobel Frye and National Office Bearer of the Fedusa’s Ashley Benjamin weigh in on whether these numbers can be sustained.
