Social Media Intern

The Social Policy Initiative (SPI) is a feminist research think- and do- tank based in Johannesburg. The vision of the SPI is a prosperous and fair society, embracing just mitigation and adaptation, where people live active and productive lives, have access to land and assets and sufficient and dignified lives. The main function of the SPI is research and analysis focusing on social policies to advance income security for all, to reduce poverty and inequality and to fulfil the Rights in the Constitution and other binding Human Rights Treaties with a feminist foundation.

The SPI wishes to appoint a Social Media Intern on a six months fixed term contract to be based in our offices in Johannesburg. The purpose of this role is leading of work in support of research, advocacy and campaigning priorities of the SPI. The individual will play a central role in building awareness of and support SPI in its endeavours of contribution towards civic society vibrancy through high level editorial content (articles, features, news stories, blogs) and other relevant outreach activities as required through the social media platforms.

Responsibilities of the role, include but shall not be limited to:

  • Develop and implement a social media plan that will be aligned with the SPI communication plan as reflected above, with key ‘unique selling points’ to audience-specific, tailored content;
  • Develop targeted social media campaigns for SPI products, events, and milestone days;
    Package and promote SPI research and advocacy activities in a strategic and timely manner through the social media platforms;
    Develop and manage innovative and focused cutting-edge social media content to grow SPI social community on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and other relevant existing and emerging platforms;
  • Keep up-to-date with new trends, developments and opportunities in the digital space and recommend they can be exploited assert the presence of SPI in the civic space;
  • Generate and create innovative digital and multimedia products that will appeal to specific audiences and draft a range of visual materials for online use;
  • Build relationships with social media editors at leading news and media organizations, helping to secure external placement of SPI’s content and enhance coverage of its work; and
  • Flexibility and adaptability to perform any other duties as and when requested by the Executive Director and the Chief Operations Officer.

Requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification – a Bachelors’ degree in communication, journalism and/or any other discipline in media and communication;
  • Minimum of one years’ relevant work experience in media relations and aspects of communication;
  • Experience in socio-economic rights related work in South Africa will be an added advantage;
  • Excellent organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications and, or related software;
  • Excellent communication skills, (verbal and writing) and evidence of dealing with diverse stakeholders;
  • Good Interpersonal skills;
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English language is necessary; and
  • A commitment to social justice and applied intersectional critical theory is necessary.

  • Remuneration – SPI is offering a monthly stipend of R7 000.

Graphic Designer

The main function of the SPI is research and analysis focusing on social policies to advance income security for all, to reduce poverty and inequality and to fulfil the Rights in the Constitution and other binding Human Rights Treaties with a feminist foundation.

The SPI wishes to appoint a Graphic Designer on a fixed term contract to be based in our offices in Johannesburg. The purpose of this role is conceptualisation and creation of visuals, illustrations, logos and layouts. Further, the role will shape the visual aspects of the SPI websites and develop various types of creative content in support of the research, advocacy and campaigning priorities of the SPI. The graphics should inspire attention of an array of stakeholders in building awareness of and support SPI in its endeavours of contribution towards civic society vibrancy.

Responsibilities of the role, include but shall not be limited to:

  • Establish a creative direction for SPI, adopt best practises and optimisation of graphic design projects;
  • Create and design various material for print and digital media;
  • Visualise and develop innovative graphic designs and bring those to life that meet the goals of SPI;
  • Generate and create innovative graphic design products that will appeal to specific audiences and draft a range of visual materials for online use;
  • Build relationships with graphic designers community of practise and collaborate to build expressive graphic designs for the SPI; and
  • Flexibility and adaptability to perform any other duties as and when requested by the Executive Director and the Chief Operations Officer.

Requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification – a Bachelors’ degree in communication, journalism and/or any other discipline in media and communication;
  • Two years of relevant work experience in media relations, design work and communication aspects;
  • Knowledge of layouts, graphic fundamentals, print and digital media;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite applications and, or related software;
  • Excellent communication skills, (verbal and writing) and evidence of dealing with diverse stakeholders;
  • Excellent organising skills and exceptional attention to detail;
  • Good Interpersonal skills;
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English language is necessary;
  • Experience in socio-economic rights related work in South Africa will be an added advantage; and
  • A commitment to social justice.

Important

  • Remuneration – SPI is offering an annual salary negotiable from R213 660 to a maximum of R223 680 (Annually) CTC, depending on qualifications, experience and in line with SPI remuneration and compensation policies.
